Frequently Asked Questions
Here you can find frequently asked questions about the service of iCarYou. The answers to these questions Refer to the current state of the service and match application. Through the site and our newsletter we will keep you informed.
-
Do I need a passenger insurance to take part of iCarYou?
No, the damage of a passenger is automatically insured by the liability insurance of the driver. Many motorists + / - 80% also have an extra passenger insurance. However, this is not necessary nor legally required because virtually all costs such as personal injury and property damage are already covered by compulsory insurance. There are exceptions, please read your insurance policy paper thoroughly.
-
What can I do in case of an unpleasant travel experience?
On your profile page you can appreciate the ride and you can put someone on your black- or white-list. That way you can exclude someone for "matching" with you personally. You can do that in the mobile app and also in the control panel of your profile. When a person has been blocked several times by different people he/she can be excluded from further participation. Thus iCarYou ensures a safe and enjoyable journey.
-
Can I participate in iCarYou with my own company?
Yes, of course, you can! The advantages for your company are very high: travel expenses are decreasing, depreciation on company cars might reduce and the accessibility of your company will improve. You may participate in three ways.
- Passive, please contact iCarYou and we will inform your staff.
- Active, Reimburse (part of) the expenses of employees who are participating in iCarYou. And place a button on the intranet in order to integrate with the match-application of iCarYou.
- You may also contact us in case you want to white label iCarYou for your organization.
-
The software does not work on my phone, how do I participate?
No problem, currently we are building the software version of (Nokia) Symbian phones, other platforms are under development. You can participate and match with our webmatcher on http://mob.icaryou.com. What you need is a mobile phone with Internet connection (WiFi is also possible) or you can use the webmatcher from your personal profile.
-
I have a lease car. Can I also participate?
Leasing companies have no objection to share a ride. However, it may be that your employer does not want you to participate in iCarYou because you will save money where your employer might have paid for already.
In a discussion with your employer you can also show them the benefits of taking part in iCarYou, improved accessibility, corporate responsibility, less depreciation on lease cars in case you make fewer miles, environmental benefits, you might find the new colleague which you were looking for so long, etc. ... -
Do I violate the Dutch “Taxiwet” if I participate?
No, you do not act contrary to the "Taxiwet". iCarYou is a form of travelling together. You take yourself the initiative to contact iCarYou. iCarYou facilitates you in finding somebody travelling together and we organise the financial transactions between passenger and driver. As a driver you only receive the travel expense for mileage, you are not a commercial transportation company.
-
What happens when there is no match and I want to work from home?
Keep in mind that during the initial period the network of iCarYou is still growing and that a match might become difficult. In that case you have the opportunity to use public transport to travel back. The pioneers and early adopters might suffer from these inconveniences but they will benefit the most from the financial reward out of the chain reward and the possibility of participation.
-
I am a driver and every month I get reimbursed by the passengers for the mileages. Do I have to pay taxes for that income?
No. In principle, you do not have to pay taxes over what you receive. In The Netherlands you are entitled to organise a carpool and reimburse 19 Eurocents to a motorist. If you have to pay tax on your income from carpool depends on your personal situation and on your current compensation levels. If you have more questions, please contact your tax consultant.
The employer may reimburse you for commuting expenses. Employers who do this, may transform the total compensation paid to iCarYou to CO2 savings and report in their environmental report. -
How do I pay my rides?
Via iDeal you charge your balance in your control panel. With a minimum investment of €20,-- you can take part as a passenger for a few number of trips. Payment to the driver is controlled automatically by the server of iCarYou. In your control panel you can always see the current state of your trips and your current balance (payments and receipts). If your balance is below the Eur 20.00 you will receive a request to this increase. This can be done through this website and in future via SMS payment.
-
Do you have a customer contact service?
Not via telephone. You can contact us vie e-mail at or fill in the contact form. It may be that iCarYou will contact you in case something goes wrong in the matching.
-
I am under 18, may I participate?

What about security?
iCarYou is safe since you travel with registered participants. In case you have an unpleasant ride you can put someone on your black- or white-list. That way you can exclude someone for "matching" with you personally. You can do that in the mobile app and also in the control panel of your profile. When a person has been blocked several times by different people he/she can be excluded from further participation. Thus iCarYou ensures a safe and enjoyable journey.
-
What is necessary to provide an effective service?
The service is offered through mobile Internet and the iCarYou match application software.
It is very important that as many as possible participants register in order to provide best flexibility. This is the difference between iCarYou and old-fashioned carpooling. iCarYou makes carpooling a completely new experience of freedom and in the longer term it will become successful.
Because mobility will be associated with your mobile phone! This is the secret of the success of iCarYou!
